The Songwriters’ Round performance format was made famous at the legendary Blue Bird Cafe in Nashville. It subsequently spread outside of Nashville, and has now become a popular means of showcasing works of songwriters all over the world.

The idea behind the Songwriters’ Round is simple: four performers sit on stage at the same time and take turns to play. The performer is encouraged to chat a little about his or her work before s/he performs each song. After the song ends, the next performer would follow, and so on. Thus, round and round it goes, as original songs are performed in an environment that is more reminiscent of a chatty living room than a concert stage.

Planned as a series of concerts, the Songwriters’ Round is a platform for local or visiting songwriters to showcase their work. The selection criteria of the producer will not be based on reputation or genre, but only that the music performed should be good original compositions, and that people would have a good time listening to them.

In the 24th concert of the Songwriters’ Round series, we are proud to present to you:

Mia Palencia

Unless you’ve been on Mars, you should have heard Mia sing by now. If so, I am certain you would have been impressed by the power of her voice, her stage craft, and the superb quality of her songwriting. What you may not know is this: it was at the Songwriters’ Round that Mia first sang her own compositions in public. Back in the days of the old NBT. The air would be thick with smoke. The crowd would be silent. And Mia’s voice would hang in the air like some soulful ghost. It was potent magic. And it will be again. Don’t miss this. [Website]

Azmyl Yunor

Amyzl has been the toast of the KL underground scene for so long he’s forgotten which direction is up. So you’d be forgiven for perhaps not having heard him play. But this state of affairs you must rectify. For Azmyl’s local folk stories are witty, satirical, funny, poignant and sad – sometimes all at the same time. His geeky stage persona belies a keen knack for writing songs that induces group sing-along. Like many who’s heard him, I think Azmyl is superb. Urban pastoral charm Malaysian style. Minus the affected cool. Thankfully. [Myspace Page]

Melina William

Once in a while, someone comes along and floors everyone. Melina is one of these. Blessed with great technical ability and musicality, she first made her name as the vocalist / bassist of Tempered Mental – one of the most jawdroppingly good bands around. Followers already know how intense her music can get. What they may not know is that Melina loses none of her power when she plays solo – something she has not done much of till now. Acoustic freight train. Stunning. [Myspace Page]

Pete Teo

Oui. [Don’t do French?]

Open Mike:

How would you like to perform your original songs at the Round? We welcome new, old, or otherwise non-professional songwriters, and will open the floor to those who wish to play after the featured acts are done. Please bring your own instruments if you can, and let me know ahead of time on the night itself. Unfortunately, due to logistic limitations, the open mike is for acoustic solo performers only and we are not able to accept bands.
