CARNIVAL HALL VIDEO!

My new music video for ‘Carnival Hall’ is out. It is part of a Nokia sponsored regional music video competition called ‘You Make It Reel’ and is shot entirely with a Nokia N93i by Kamal Sabran in only 4 days. It is likely to be shown on TV soon, but you can watch it here first!

2. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I was invited to be one of the artistes participating in the NOKIA ‘You Make It Reel’ music video competition some time ago. Part of a regional product promotion campaign by Nokia, the competition is hyped as a way to find the best young and ‘undiscovered’ music video director in Asia. After an initial round of submissions and several press briefings, I was finally introduced to contesting director Kamal Sabran on Friday the 2nd of March (the organisers drew lots to match directors with artistes). He is a video installation artist and teaches at the arts & design department at UITM in Kuala Lumpur. This is his first music video.

As all contesting directors in the final round of the competition were only given 5 days to hand in their new videos after meeting their artistes, Kamal and I had a quick pre-production meeting on the same day we met, then shot the thing the following day at the arts & design studio at UITM with the help of Kamal’s students, family and friends. My shoot took just one day. Kamal spent the next three days shooting additional footage as well as editing and wrapping up. He submitted the finished video on the morning of the 5th day, more than 12 hours before the deadline. I believe ours was the first video of the ten Malaysian finalists to be completed and handed in. Notwithstanding that, I think it is amazing work for something completed in a little more than 4 days and shot entirely with a NOKIA N93i. Anyway, the winner will be announced on 16th of March…

Meanwhile, my thanks and admiration goes out to Kamal and his hordes of assistants and crews. They were resourceful, enthusiastic and brilliant. I hope they win. Kudos also goes to Nokia for giving exposure to young homegrown talents like Kamal.

[NOTES ON IMAGE RESOLUTION]: The NOKIA N93i shoots video at a resolution of 3.2 megapixel. The ‘blurry’ images you see here is more the result of video compression technology [applied in order to faciliate video streaming over the net] than any issue with the device itself.

It took almost 4 months to complete and is a very different beast altogether. Underlining both videos are similarly neat and related ideas though. It’s been wowwing everyone who’s seen it. Check it out!
